buying a laptop? let us help you choose
Laptops are being one hell of a need these days. From college students to business travelers, Laptops are essential for everybody. And due to its portability, it is considered as a must-buy. The most confusing thing while buying a laptop is its large variety available in the market, with equally promising results. So we are going to help you be more clear on what you exactly want.
who are you?
Are you an everyday user that uses a laptop for checking mails and doing general stuffs? Or are you a graphics designer who designs complex graphics models? Or are you an avid gamer who spends most of his time gaming? The basic as well as the most important thing while choosing a Laptop is understanding your needs. The more you understand your need, the easier it gets for you to choose your Laptop.
The processor and the memory
The basic processors used in today’s laptops are Intel’s core processors ( Intel core i3/i5/i7, Intel core 2 duo, etc ). The Intel Core i is the newest offering from Intel and with the claim of multitasking being better than its preceedors. The 4 threads on the core i processor provides 2 simultaneous processing on each cores as opposed to the 2 simultaneous processing on the Core 2 duo. And the lower voltage processing makes the Intel core i more battery efficient. Similarly there are some laptops which have AMD 64 dual core processors. Both the AMD and the Intel variants have dual cores and both support 64 bit computing.
The memory (RAM) is another basic component of the system. The more the RAM, the better the performance. Basically the RAM on a laptop sold these days can be as low as 2GB and can go higher. So, choose the RAM as per your need. Another factor that determines RAM is the bus speed. The higher the bus speed of the RAM, the faster the information is triggered, making the overall processing faster.
Screen size
The screen size of a laptop is inversely proportional to the portability. The larger the screen is, the less portable is the laptop. Today’s general use laptops come with a screen size from 14” to 17” and higher. It entirely depends on you on what screen size to choose. If you are a movie fanatic, you might want to choose a laptop with larger screen size and a wider screen to make your experience better. If you are a businessman, you might want to choose a laptop with smaller screen because you would supposedly be carrying it around to business trips. And if you are a bit concerned about the battery life too, you might totally want to go with a smaller screen sized laptop.
The battery
The battery life of the laptop depends on the type of the battery you are using (too obvious). The laptops generally come with a standard 6 cell battery which claims to give 4 hours of battery life (minus the wireless surfing ). If you are someone who spends most of his time outside, then you would want to order a 9 cell battery with your laptop with supposedly 6 hours of battery life (minus the wireless, again ).
The hard drive
Sweet Zesus, a movie collection? Then you will surely need a hard drive with a higher storage capacity. Most laptops come today with 250GB, 320GB or 500GB hard drives. It’s entirely depends on your usability on what hard drive to choose. Hard drives come in 5400 and 7200RPMs. The higher the RPM (Revolutions Per Minute, of the platters), the higher the data access, but lower the battery efficiency. So it is your call on what to choose.
The Graphics
Are you an avid gamer, or you do animations? Or do you do complex graphic design models? You will need a laptop with a dedicated video card. Most laptops come with dedicated video cards from ATI, nVIDIA etc. Other low end laptops come with a shared video card basically with an Intel chip. This factor can hugely affect the price tag so if you are a bit price conscious and you don’t do much of graphics stuffs, then you can wisely choose a laptop offering a shared video card.
Last but definitely not the least
The wireless capability : Make sure your laptop meets the basic Wi-Fi standards. The basic laptops come with a standard of 802.11b/g, but you might want to have a better standard for new and developed standards like 802.11n provides a better data transmission rate and a better range.
The number of USB 2.0 ports : Laptops these days come with at least 2 USB ports. Some might offer 4 ports while others can go upto 6 ports. The number of USB ports also needs to be determined as per your usaability.
A full keyboard: Most 14 inch laptops come without a full keyboard. Which means you will have no number pad. If you do work which requires data entry, then this must effect your job fully. So, you might want to consider about the keyboard as well.
The audio quality: The audio quality also might be a considerable fact for audio playback is one of the daily life activities. Most laptops come with audio standards like SRS premium sound, Dolby Digital etc.
In the end
Choosing a laptop totally depends on one’s needs. We cannot choose a laptop for you, we can only give necessary information that helps you choose one. And about the brand of laptops, it’s one’s personal opinion. Someone might incline to one brand while other with the same requirements might incline to another brand. It’s all about you.
All The Best!!
