Facebook privacy - a term most of us aren't aware of

Facebook is one of the largest and popular social networking site with so many features that help in active social networking, reconnecting with friends, advertising your page and whatnots. With a growing member base and popularity, Facebook has now become an ordinary thing in everybody’s life. We check out Facebook very much often to catch up with friends, be updated or things as such. But what most of us aren’t aware of us is the Facebook privacy. There always can be ways to misuse your profile information on Facebook. So for this, Facebook has provided a privacy system which safeguards us from all of these risks. But the problem is that most of us are not aware of the privacy settings and the ones who are aware know less about the process. So here I discuss some points that can be helpful to maintain the privacy of your information on Facebook.

There is always a privacy setting
Most social networking websites, including Facebook have a privacy setting. In fact I must say Facebook has a simplified yet effective privacy setting menu. We can choose our personal settings from a variety of options. The Facebook privacy settings can be accessed via the account option on the right side of the top panel of Facebook.  Below is the Facebook privacy settings for my profile.

I have different variants of options and I have information I share with everybody and I have information I would not prefer to share with everybody, so I have configured my settings according to my usage. And thanks to Facebook it has a way simplified privacy option.

Save your photographs
The most important thing to realize in Facebook is the photo privacy because it can bring about a potential to many risks like identity thefts and such. In Facebook, eventhough we block the photo link via our main page, people can still see our photos via other friends’ pages through the link Facebook places on the wall while we comment on their pictures. So you’ve got to go the Facebook profile privacy panel and choose edit settings linear to Photo Privacy, and after you open up the Photo Privacy settings, set the privacy level according to your will, like I’ve set each photo album privacy to ‘only friends’.

and the videos too
Facebook strangely doesn’t provide any specific privacy setting to videos. And this is the reason I have found so many videos of the people on my friend network can be seen by everybody publicly. And this is another risk to your privacy. So to set the video privacy settings on Facebook, goto Facebook videos and click on the small structure( I don’t know what that is ) on video thumbnail which would then open the edit video panel. Then set the level of privacy and save the video. You need to do this to every video you have. This is very important because many people don’t have the idea about video privacy.

Don’t just add back anybody and everybody who adds you
Think about it. They are potentially stalkers who want to gain your profile information and updates on Facebook and misuse them. You need to be careful about whom are you going to add.

Facebook is relatively a wide networking site with millions of members and it’s good in a way people are going to be in touch and catch up. But the mishandling of your privacy structure can bring a huge problem in the future.
Prevention is better than cure. Think about it.
